Our post-doctoral fellow, Lucas Ferraço Nassif, will be present at the Congreso Internacional Sobre Psicoanálisis y Arte: Al Encontro de lo Real, on March 17-20, at the Facultad de Filosofía, Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
His presentation is titled "Contemporary Post-Lacanian Psychoanalysis: Shimmering Unconscious and Death-Images".
ABSTRACT How do moving images and sounds operate analyses of the unconscious in nonmetonymical relations to the Other? Why is neurosis the wallpaper of psychoanalytic practices? Why must words mean something, represent a feeling, or go back to an origin story that is usually understood in familistic bonds? This presentation will put forth a new conceptualization for the Diagram of Saussure, used by Jacques Lacan in Seminar III: Psychoses when elaborating on the point de capiton. With the critiques produced by Félix Guattari and Gilles Deleuze, we propose a different reading of Lacan’s lesson, concerned with a contemporary screen-based media undertaking of the clinic and the theory of the unconscious. We will underscore both the contemporary psychoanalytic practice and theory influenced by the nonrepresentational counterpoints brought by schizoanalysis, enabling new grasps on libidinal productions. For that, we will introduce a new concept that is the death-image. Death-images are crises: the entropic agency of the shimmering unconscious that works with immanent refractions instead of transcendent reflections. They are images of confusion where the modeling forces of narcissism run with the literality of the imaginary short-circuited to the real, bypassing the symbolic. Our objects of study will be screen-based media narratives that highlight both the haptic and shimmering predicates of moving images and sounds. In relation to the graphic productions of the body, these objects of study are not understood as illustrations or as representations: they are active producers of thought in a machinic ecology. Via refractions instead of reflections, the shimmering unconscious actively creates new virtualities for both new universes of reference and new forms of expression to emerge. These are new existential territories. In technological vitalism, entangling the organic with the inorganic, the body conducts machinic assemblages to express and exist beyond the dialectics of Hegelian transcendent interactions between S1 and S2. The shimmering unconscious refracts with no temporal origin story; it is not the transcendent embodiment of meaning-making framed by the verbal Other. It is an intense semiotic multiplicity.
