We are happy to announce that Tiago Cravidão, PhD scholar and member of the FILM AND DEATH team, has just published an article titled "A arte da boa morte mediada pelo cinema: a hipótese de um gênero. The cinematic mediation of the art of the good death as a possible genre" in PHILIA | Filosofia Literatura & Arte, v. 7, n. 2 (2025).
Abstract Currently, the diversity of films that address the theme of the end of life does not allow us to claim the existence of a cinematic genre. However, concepts such as the camera effectand fabulationare useful tools for identifying films that renew the recommendations of the Ars Moriendi, a 15th-century manual which, making use of those concepts, prescribes what a Christian should do in order to die well. Over the centuries, this book gave rise to the literary genre of the arts of dying well, giving expression to a set of practices that are increasingly widespread in the medical care of people in palliative care, and in which, after all, cinema—less for what it shows than for the practical realization of both the camera effectand the concept of fabulation—may come to play a relevant role.
